Grooming FAQ

Pet grooming can also be a necessity for some pets' proper daily functions. For example, a dog with unclipped toenails may not be able to walk comfortably, which in turn discourages her from exercising daily.

Many times, a health concern is discovered through the act of grooming. Parasite infestations such as fleas or ticks are often found during bathing or brushing sessions. Matted fur could be hiding skin diseases or outside irritants such as clinging plant pods or thorns. If a pet owner neglects his or her pet grooming responsibilities, these small irritants can become infected or abscessed. Dirt inside the ears can also be cleaned out before it becomes compacted. Observations during routine pet grooming can uncover tumors, weight problems and vision trouble.

A professional pet groomer is trained to recognize the early signs of physical problems. Through the grooming process a pet is thoroughly cleaned and examined. Any abnormalities are noted and reported to the pet owner.

How often should I get my dog professionally groomed?

This can vary greatly from breed to breed and also customer requirements. What is acceptable for all breeds is every 8 to 12 weeks. However some breeds such as bichons must be professionally groomed every 4 – 6 weeks due to their coat texture and how easily it mats.

Can I just bring my dog in for a wash and nail trim?

Yes we offer a washing service which included shampooing, fluff drying ear cleaning and nail trimming.

I have a jack Russell, is there any pint in getting him groomed?

Yes, all dogs regardless of coat style and length should be professionally groomed. Short haired dogs shed a lot of hair so the grooming session which involves specialised tools that rake out the undercoat and will help to minimise shedding.

I have recently bought a new puppy, how old should she be before I can get her groomed.

Your pet has a mind of its own and it is virtually impossible to persuade an unwilling 6-8month old pet to be groomed, espically if it is frightened. Sharp scissors & clippers dictate that often a fearful pet can be a real danger to itself and the groomer. In some circumstances it may be neccessary to carry out grooming at a ets under sedation or anaesthetic with all the revelant costs inoled. All that can be avoided by slow gentle training and introduction to grooming as a young pup.

As soon as your puppy has received all her injections I would recommend our Puppy Socialisation Plan to begin with and from there on regular grooming can take place

Do you brush my dogs teeth?

We don’t offer this service but can advise on the best way to comfortable brush your pets teeth at home. If possible start when your dog is a puppy. To begin with gently rub your finger around your dogs teeth and gums for a few minutes each day for a week, reward after each time. Gradually introduce the toothbrush and dry brush for a few minutes each day. Then finally add toothpaste and gently brush your dogs teeth using plenty of encouraging words and remember always reward after each session. Also use plaqueoff on a daily basis to help fight tartar build up.

What does it cost to get my dog groomed?

The price for grooming varies so much from breed to breed and from dog to dog. The price depends on the conditon of the coat, size of the dog and the temperment of the dog. A rough quote will be givin to you but things like Dematting a dogs coat or handling of difficult dogs will require extra time and result in an additional charge.

If I have made an appointment but have to cancel this what happens?

We respectfully ask that you give at least 24hrs notice of cancellation of appointments, if you are unavoidably find that you cannot attend.Customers failing to give this notice will be charged 50% of the standard grooming fee before a further appointment can be rebooked. We kindly ask customers to arrive on time for there appointments or telephone us to let us know you are running late and we will do our best to accomodate you. Customers who arrive more than 15 mins late may lose there appointment.

Do you muzzle dogs?

As a rule no, although if a pet dislikes for example having its feet trimmed or nails clipped and is liable to bite we may use a soft nylon muzzle for a short period of time till this part of the grooming the pet dislikes is done. We do not reccommend muzzling dogs for a complete grooming session as pets can become stressed, and may suffer from heat stress whilst drying etc as pets need to be able to pant whilst grooming. If a pet is liable to bite continually then we would normally reccommend grooming at a vet clinic under a mild sedative to prevent the pet becoming stressed or injuring itself.

Do you sedate dogs?

We do not sedate dogs and it is our policy not to accept sedated dogs as these dogs need to be groomed at a veterinary clinic with a vet on site incase of any reaction or problems.
